Gibson bass guitar part descriptions - EB0/EB3 bass cutaways
The cutaways on EB0, EB3, Melody Maker and SB series basses of the 1960s and 70s did vary over the years. These changes are very subtle, and generally are in size and shape of the bevel - rather than depth of the cutaway itself. Some variations are shown here - it may actually be that there are more - if you have a Gibson SG-style bass with different cutaways than shown here please let me know
1961-6? Used for the majority of the 1960s, at least until 1967, on EB0, EB3 and Melody maker basses
1969-70 Used on later 1960s solid, and early seventies split-headstock basses
1970-71 Very light bevelling of the cutaway - common in later split headstock basses
1972 A distinctively wide bevel - seen on the very earliest maple-necked EB basses, but rarely used. 1972 only.
1972-79 The most used cutaway design for maple-necked EB basses
