1965 Gibson EB3 bass guitar - Pelham blue1965 Gibson EB3 Bass (Pelham blue)

In the 1960s custom coloured instruments were available in limited quantities. Unlike Fender custom colours, which were mass produced, Gibson custom colours were a rarity. it us not known how many Pelham blue EB3 (and EB0) models were shipped, but there were certainly not many. All pictures are courtesy of Craig Boehme who sold this instrument on Ebay for a little over $3000 in June 2005
This instrument is missing its chrome finger rest, but is otherwise complete

  • In picture 1 below, you can clearly see (in the expanded view) the serial numbers on the pots 1376529 - meaning they were manufactured by CTS in the 29th week of 1965.
  • Picture 2 clearly shows the characteristic early 60s EB3 features - wide spaced controls, bar bridge with mute, and even the last remnants of silver paint peeled from the bridge pickup.
  • The back of this guitar once had a sticker, which has protected the finish beneath it. The true color of Pelham blue can be seen in picture 3. The rest of the guitars body has yellowed to a much greener shade. Notice also the larger back cover which corresponds to the wider control spacing seen in pic. 2

The Elite series are instruments that approach custom shop perfection. They're made with premium woods, fitted with American pickups and circuitry -- even American-made toggle switches and Grover tuners. They are made at a special factory exclusively devoted to their manufacture where they receive a high degree of hands-on luthier attention. The EB-3 is a bass classic, made famous by Jack Bruce, with its SG-style body in bookmatched mahogany, a 30-1/2'-scale neck, a USA humbucker at the neck, and USA mini-humbucker at the bridge.

Epiphone EB-0 Bass Guitar
Epiphone EB-0 Bass

Cherry or Ebony finishes

Authorized by Gibson, Epiphone has brought back a classic of the early '60s. Based on the SG, this guitar-sized (30-1/2' scale) bass is a great axe for anyone not quite large enough for a full-size bass. Though small and light, its sound is huge, and full-size people can play it too.
